Jimmy Kimmel never misses the chance to roast President Donald Trump and his fellow conservatives on Live, so it came as no surprise that the late night host continued to take shots at the president while congratulating the newly appointed Pope Leo XIV.
“Congratulations to him. This is a historic era we are living in,” Kimmel said during Thursday’s (May 8) broadcast, where he called Trump out for his relationship with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. “We have an American Pope and a Russian president. Isn’t it incredible?”
When Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen to become the new pope, President Trump announced that he is looking forward to meeting the first-ever American pope. But that feeling may be short-lived, Kimmel joked.
“Wait till he finds out how many times this new pope has criticized him,” Kimmel pointed out, likely referencing the several social media posts that have been uncovered showing Pope Leo XIV criticizing President Trump and President J.D. Vance’s politics.
Kimmel then shared that conservative social media is “losing its mind” because “the new pope cares for the poor and the sick and the plight of immigrants, and they don’t like that at all.”
He then shared social media posts from “looney” Laura Loomer who called the new pope a “Marxist puppet,” while another said the pope’s appointment was making him reconsider becoming Catholic.
“What a loss for the faith,” Kimmel fired back, before adding, “Trump just hit the Vatican with an 80% tariff on pointy hats.”
Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
